British Columbia Southern Interior (formerly known as Southern Interior) is a federal electoral district in the province of British Columbia, Canada, that has been represented in the Canadian House of Commons since 2004.
Description
Regions included in the riding are the Similkameen, the southern half of the South Okanagan region, the Boundary Country, all of the West Kootenay region, the Slocan Valley, Lower (but not Upper) Arrow Lake, and including the east shore of Kootenay Lake from opposite Kaslo northwards.
Municipalities within the riding are Princeton, Keremeos, Oliver, Osoyoos, Greenwood, Grand Forks, Trail, Rossland, Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale, Castlegar, Nelson, Salmo, Slocan, New Denver, Silverton, and Kaslo.
History
This electoral district was created as "Southern Interior" in 2003 from Kootenay—Boundary—Okanagan and part of Okanagan—Coquihalla riding.
In 2004, its name was changed to "British Columbia Southern Interior".
Members of Parliament
Current Member of Parliament
The riding's Member of Parliament is New Democrat Alex Atamanenko. He was elected in 2006, after first losing to Conservative Jim Gouk by 680 votes in 2004. Atamanenko is a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, a role he has fulfilled since taking his seat, and has been an associate member of various parliamentary committees during his term.
